What is a Paid-On-Call Firefighter?
Being paid-on-call means members respond to incidents when they are available. They respond to the station with their person vehicle and then drive whatever apparatus is requested to the incident.

Candidate Requirements:
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED
- Must be a US Citizen, meet Michigan residency requirements, and be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment
- Must live within the boundaries of the Newaygo Fire District. (exceptions for this may be made for special circumstances.)
- The applicant must be able to speak clearly and be understood
- Maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license; no more than 5 points to be hired
- No felony or gross misdemeanor convictions
- Be able respond to a minimum of 25% of calls dispatched to the department.
- Applicant must be physically capable of:
- Bending and stretching in order to accomplish tasks of pushing, pulling, grasping and carrying of objects having a weight of 50 pounds or more
- Donning and wearing approximately fifty pounds of protective clothing and self contained breathing apparatus
- Engaging in crawling, walking, climbing, prying, chopping, and carrying scenarios
- Occasionally dragging weights up to 165 pounds for seventy feet
- Climbing ladders varying in length from 14’ to 36’
- Withstanding periods of overheating and chilling often times in wet clothing
Firefighters Physical Ability Test
This test is designed to test the candidates fire service related physical skills. All candidates will be timed during the test and must show the required level of skill proficiency for each individual test.
Interview and Background Check
After the completion of the testing process, successful candidates will participate in a structured oral interview and background investigation. Upon successful completion of the interview and background investigation, the candidate will receive a conditional offer of employment as a Reserve Firefighter and must successfully pass the Physical Examination.

Those individuals that meet the established minimum qualifications will be scheduled to take a written and practical test.
Applicants passing the testing phase of the process are selected to participate in a structured oral interview. Successful candidates must then pass a background investigation and post offer physical examination.
The Newaygo Fire Department’s Firefighter Training Program will help prepare you for the State of Michigan certification class and exam.
* Meeting Nights are at the Newaygo Fire Station the first three Mondays of every month.
